Walter O. Nelson, Jr., 73, of Woodville, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2025. Born and raised in Port Arthur, Texas, and a longtime resident of Nederland, Texas, Walter lived a life full of service, creativity, and love for his family, friends, and community. He was always passionate about photography and electronic devices, which sparked his curiosity and creativity.
At the age of 19, Walter joined the U.S. Army and served as a radio repairman in the esteemed 2nd Armored Division stationed at Fort Hood. After his service, Walter worked as a unit operator for Texaco, enduring chilly winters with as many layers as he could pile on and weathering the summer heat with resilience. Later, he was able to continue his passion in photography and promotional filming while working at Lamar Institute of Technology. After retirement, he continued sharing his gift for photography, capturing memorable moments for the City of Nederland, local businesses, weddings, and countless events across the Golden Triangle area before moving to Woodville, Texas.
Walter was a man of deep faith, strong Christian beliefs and a carefree spirit. Known for his boundless generosity and a heart full of compassion, he never hesitated to help others. Walter’s love for animals, particularly dachshunds, was unmatched. He often dreamed of rescuing every stray and dachshund in need, and his life reflected that same spirit of kindness and care.
He is survived by his brother, John Nelson; his daughters, Lori Nelson and Amy Duval and her husband, Nathan; his five grandchildren, Monet, Remy, Kenzie, Silvia, and Camryn. Walter also leaves behind countless friends who were touched by his warmth and humor. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter O. Nelson, Sr., and Gladys (Gorton) Nelson, as well as his brother, Richard Nelson, and sister, Bettie Butcher.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Dachshunds Rescue of Houston, a cause close to Walter’s heart. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
