Obituary

Sylvia Belle Odom, 90, of Woodville passed away peacefully Friday, August 18, 2023.

 

Born on Friday, January 6, 1933 in Lions Point, Louisianna to Everall L. Frees and Aleta Bertrand Frees. In her younger years Sylvia loved basketball and actually won a state championship, she also enjoyed roller-skating, dancing to western swing and bluegrass. She returned to high school as an adult and graduated just ahead of her teenage children. She then went on to earn a Bachelors of Science as an RN. She fell in love with nursing and worked for Tyler County Hospital for over 30 years. Sylvia spent 12 years as a temple worker for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She “retired” from temple work to help with genealogy in the family history center. She was an Astros fan through and through, and loved the sport of baseball due to her father playing minor league ball. As she got older, Sylvia enjoyed cooking, fishing, traveling, and playing dominoes with people she loved.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Everall and Aleta Frees; husband, Barton Adnell Odom; daughter, Frances Aleta Odom.

She is survived by her son, Everall Lee Odom and his wife Kay; grandchildren, DeAnn Smith and husband Kent, Rachel Loechel and husband Brant, and Leah Hicks and husband Ben; great- grandchildren, Austin Smith, Brynn Smith, Chaney Rodriguez, Dailey Smith, Katelynn Parr, Garrett Loechel, Colton Loechel, Justine Varnado, Faith Hicks and Benjamin Hicks.

Funeral service will be held Sunday, August 20, 2023, at 4pm The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, burial to follow at Town Bluff Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3pm until 4pm prior to the service.

Serving as pallbearers will be Austin Smith, Brynn Smith, Dailey Smith, Colton Loechel, Garrett Loechel, Benjamin Hicks, Faith Hicks, Eric Vernado, Josh Rodriguez, Tyler Parr.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Chaney Rodriguez, Justine Varnado, Cynthia Smith, and Katelyn Parr.
