Sarah Lee Read Cowart

Sarah Lee Read Cowart, 98, died on December 27, 2021 surrounded by family. She was born on October 12, 1923 in the community of Emily, Texas, to Clayborn and Ora Lee Read.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Spurger, Texas. Her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her church family brought her great joy. In her younger years she enjoyed gardening, quilting, making jelly, and canning vegetables.

Sarah Lee is survived by her son, John D. Cowart Jr. and wife Nancy, of Lumberton; sister Vera Marie Read Jordanof Spurger ; grandchildren Sondra Cowart Peiffer and husband Neal of Lumberton, Stephanie Cowart Gilley and husband Doug of Silsbee, John D. Cowart III and wife Christy of Lumberton, Elijah Cowart and wife Cortney of League City; seven great grandchildren; one great- great grandchild; several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great- great nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.

Sarah Lee is preceded in death by her husband, J. D. Cowart Sr.; her parents Clayborn and Ora Lee Read; and brothers Henry, Harold, and Allen Read.

A gathering of Mrs. Cowart’s family and friends will be from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 30, 2021, Ebenezer Baptist Church, CR 3625, Colmesneil, Texas and her funeral will follow beginning at 11:o0 a.m.
