Ruth Annette Jordan Obituary

Ruth Annette Dabney Jordan, 93, of Spurger passed away peacefully on January 26, 2024.

Ruth Annette Dabney Jordan was born in Coldspring, Texas, on January 12, 1931, to the parents of Elijah Rigby, Jr. and Annie Estelle West Dabney.  She had one older brother, Leroy Dabney, and many relatives in the Liberty Hill Community.  Ruth loved outdoor farm life and all animals, but her passion became music when she learned to play the piano. Throughout high school, she played for churches, singing conventions, school gatherings, community events, and even for the forest rangers over her father’s Forest Service radio!  When she graduated from Coldspring High School in 1948, she attended Sam Houston State Teachers’ College to major in music and education.  Ruth met her soon-to-be husband, Earl Jordan, while he was mopping the floor in her dormitory.  They were married on March 22, 1951, and upon graduation, they both began teaching at Big Sandy ISD. When Earl had to leave to serve in the Army, Ruth finished the year, moved back to Liberty Hill, and worked at the San Jacinto County Courthouse while waiting for him to return from Japan.  At that time, they moved to Livingston, and in several years, their family grew to five, and Ruth returned to teach at Big Sandy for thirty more years. She taught several different elementary grades and the entire school music program. One of her loves was the “Big Sandy Singers” and the young musicians she encouraged to learn and enjoy music and the many, many programs she directed.  A sought-out accompanist, Ruth played for many LISD musicals, community events, and the Music Club in Livingston.  Ruth and Earl were active members of Central Baptist Church, where she played the organ and/or piano for over twenty-five years. Upon their school retirement in 1988, they moved to the Beech Creek Community near Spurger. It didn’t take long for Ruth to start as an accompanist at First Baptist Church in Spurger, for she said that God had blessed her with this gift, how could she not use it to worship and serve Him? For twenty-five plus years she played the piano for worship and groups, helped with Christmas/Easter events, and as she loved to do, encouraged young and old alike to use and share what God had blessed them with musically. During this time, Ruth and Earl took many RV trips with their life-long friends, the Wrens, travelling “to parts unknown” as she would say, composing songs to go along with their travel destinations. When at home, Ruth rarely missed a “Busy Bodies” meeting, full of friendships, food, and fun! But her favorite pastime, however, was spending time with her “Grands!”  Ruth loved to play games, cook with them, sew for them and anything they would think of to do. Her family and friends alike will remember the impact of her life upon their own.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at 2 pm at the First Baptist Church in Spurger with burial to follow at the Beech Creek Cemetery in Spurger.  Visitation will be held Tuesday at the church from 1 pm until the time of the service.

Serving as pallbearers will be Benjamin Moseley, Johnny Moseley, Elijah Moseley, Christopher Moseley, Nathan Jordan, Richard Jordan and Neal Jordan.
