Robert Earl Weldon, Jr., 76, of Woodville, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2024, in Conroe, Texas, from complications following heart bypass surgery. Robert was born in Port Arthur, Texas on October 18, 1947, as the first of five children to Peggy (Jackson) Weldon and Robert Earl Weldon, Sr.
Robert grew up attending schools in Port Arthur, starting at DeQueen Elementary up through graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1966. He continued his education attending classes at Lamar University in Beaumont, working toward a major in psychology, but was then drafted into the United States Army and served stateside during the Vietnam War Era.
He wore several hats throughout his working life, starting at a young age as a paperboy, then on to sporting goods salesman at Gibson’s, clerk in the Army, and then quality control lab technician at Texaco. After 11 years at Texaco, he moved on to another chapter at Keys’ Electric before starting his own business, "Weldon's Furniture Repair and Refinishing" in Port Neches, Texas, which he ran for many years. Due to health concerns, he pivoted in his early 50s and returned to school earning an associate’s degree in Management Information Systems from Lamar - Port Arthur. That led to his role as an IT analyst at a Hewlett-Packard call center before hanging up his final working hat in 2009.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and shared that passion with his sons as they were growing up, making many cherished memories. He was a trivia master, often crushing Jeopardy contestants from the comfort of his recliner, and he almost never met a word jumble or crossword puzzle that he couldn’t solve. He was also very talented at woodworking and expressed it through hand-carving miniature-scale furniture under his side business “minikins”, and by repairing, restoring, and building custom furniture.
Robert never met a stranger. He either bumped into, or made, friends everywhere he went; to know him was to love him.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Linda (Dowling) Weldon, of Woodville; sons, Mark Weldon and wife, Susan of Kingwood; Scott Weldon and wife, Leah, of Kingwood and Steven Weldon and wife, Dannette of Silsbee; brothers, David Weldon and wife, Karie, of Benbrook, Gary Weldon and wife, Jacqueline of Houston and Kevin Weldon of Villa Rica, Georgia; grandchildren, Erica Blair Weldon and wife, Emily, Adam Weldon, Allison Weldon, Lee Moynahan Ill, Megan Morgan and husband, Dan, Molly Moynahan, Libby Weldon, Mason Weldon, Tessa Buck, Gracin Weldon, Grady Weldon, Kayley Goodhue, Taylor Wright, and William Wright; great-grandchildren, Everett Morgan, Adaline Morgan, Charlotte Buck and Mini Buck; special friends, Mark Lee and Jim Davant; and his beloved dog, T9C.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Peggy Weldon and Robert Earl Weldon, Sr.; sister, Pamela Jean Weldon; and good friend Ramona Davant.
