Michael McGinnis Obituary

Michael Paul McGinnis, 74, of Woodville, Texas, passed away Monday, April 22, 2024, in Woodville, Texas.

Michael was born in Houston, Texas to Edward and Bertha McGinnis on September 12, 1949.  He graduated from Spring Branch High School in 1969.

Michael, aka “Uncle Mike” or “Mac”, was a proud “hippie” and loved to share stories with his niece, Laurie, about his hippie days and young travel experiences.

Over 20 years ago Michael moved to Woodville, Texas and he loved it!  He appreciated his friends in the City of Ivanhoe, drinking beer, sitting outside, and feeding the birds in the morning.  He enjoyed his quiet, simple life in the Piney Woods and was always ready to head back home after a visit to Houston!

Michael loved the Astro’s and would get the matching baseball cap for the season.  He enjoyed rock-n-roll, jigsaw puzzles, word searches, lotto scratch offs, hunting, projects around the house and growing tomatoes.  Michael was friendly, had a good sense of humor and often spoke before filtering his thoughts which would sometimes catch people off guard, but he was a kind soul and appreciated for being himself.  He had fun attending high school reunions over the years to catch up with old friends and classmates.  Michael’s funny perspective, fun personality and genuine smile will be missed.

He is survived by his sister, Eileen McGinnis of Houston, Texas; nieces, Laurie Black and husband, Harvey of Jersey Village, Texas and Jennifer Eby and husband, John of Kingwood, Texas; nephews, Lance Smith and wife, Vicki of Hockley, Texas and Michael McGinnis and wife, Lisa of The Woodlands, Texas; and by sister-in-law, Judy McGinnis of Jersey Village, Texas; and many great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Bertha McGinnis; his sister, Grace Smith; brother, Gene McGinnis; brother-in-law, Larry Smith; and by his beloved dogs.

There will be a private celebration in Michael’s honor.

Thank you to Harbor Hospice of Jasper, especially to Nurse Rhonda, who was so helpful to the family and went the extra mile to make Michael feel appreciated.  Thank you very much to Dogwood Trails Manor, which had excellent communication with the family and showed true caring for Michael.
