Mattie Blanch King Blackmon Bryan, 88, passed away on May 30, 2026. Born August 31, 1937, in Tyler County, Texas, she was a woman of abundant joy who brightened every life she touched.
Mattie was a loving mother to Kenny, Rhonda, and Jessica (Lynn) as well as a devoted grandmother to Autumn and Duncan. She loved new experiences and lived in interesting places, including Germany and Alaska. When she lived in Tyler County, she grew beautiful flowers, fruits, and vegetables as well as planting dozens of pecan trees.
After attending high school in Spurger, Texas, she then moved to the big city of Houston where, at 17, she started work at the credit union and loved having visitors from East Texas, especially her sister Margie. Later in life, she returned to Houston. This time she lived in a high-rise condo where she welcomed visitors and experienced all the things Houston had to offer.
While raising her children, Mattie worked as a school nurse, but her most cherished role was caring for her family. She retired as a loan officer at the bank in Chester, Texas, where she was a trusted and beloved member of the community. After retirement, she then spent her time with her family and friends, selling her famous homemade soap, serving as a docent at Heritage Village in Woodville, and volunteering with the United Methodist Church in downtown Houston to serve the homeless.
She is survived by her daughters, Rhonda Cheryl Blackmon Anderson and husband Bret Hall Anderson, and Jessica Lynn Blackmon Dickerson; grandchildren Autumn Dickerson and Duncan Dickerson and wife Alexandra; great-grandchildren Declan Dickerson and Delaney Dickerson; sister Margie King Crawford and husband Governor Leon Crawford; and brother-in-law George William Vinson. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Thomas King and Nena Faye Crosby King; brother Jackie King; sisters Katie King Hutto and Nellie King Vinson; husbands Waymon Bryan and Doyle Bryan; former husband Paul Blackmon; and her son, Kenneth Paul Blackmon.
Mattie leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, service, and hospitality. She will be deeply missed and long remembered.
