M. F. “Herky” Thornton, 82, of Colmesneil passed away May 13, 2023.
Born in Lufkin, Texas to Douglas and Alberta Thornton, he lived in Colmesneil for many years. He was retired from the oil field. Herky was a proud 50 year plus member of the Buna Mason Lodge #1095. A jack of all trades who enjoyed fishing, hunting and cooking, he was best known for his story telling and making everyone believe them to be true. He had a motto “What came to the deer camp stayed at the deer camp” meaning that if any object became unclaimed for more than a day it became his. He truly loved his family and spending time with them.
Herky was preceded in death by his father, Douglas Thornton; mother, Alberta Ivie Thornton; brother, James Thornton; daughter, Suzanne Gentz.
He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Henry Thornton; sister, Sonja Albarado; children, Nicole Crawford and partner, Jason, Amy Thornton and husband, Geoffery, Christine Cauthen and husband, Will, Douglas Thornton and wife, Amy Nicole, Wade Henry and wife, Wendy, Ashley Henry, Gaile Henry, III and wife, Kelly; fourteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a host of other family members and friends.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at 11 am at the Riley Funeral Home Chapel with a Masonic Rite service to follow. A graveside service will be held at 2 pm at the Ivie Cemetery in Apple Springs, Texas.
Serving as pallbearers will be Geoffery Thornton, Douglas Thornton, John Albarado, Justin Parish, Ryan Parish and Jason Gilmer.
