Donald Cowart Obituary

Donald Wayne Cowart passed away peacefully on the evening of November 9, 2022, at the age of 72. He was born in Jasper, Texas to Jim Cowart and Johnnie Lee Odom Cowart on March 6, 1950. He was born with a twin brother, who unfortunately did not survive birth.

Don, as he was known to all, was a country boy at heart, but moved to the big city of Houston for financial opportunities and to raise his two young children, Marcus, and Julie.  The family grew a few years later when Don and his wife Beth adopted Don's niece, Dionne, following the tragic death of his sister, Diane. Years later, Don and his wife, Beth would have another child, Jeff. In 1994, Don married Theresa Ramsey and they were blessed with their son, Tylar, in 1995.

Don worked a variety of jobs including welder and purchasing agent until he was bit by the entrepreneurial bug and started his own company, Specialized Services, which manufactured a variety of products, most notably jewelry display fixtures for large jewelers including Gordon’s, Zales, and Helzberg Diamonds.  Don eventually closed Specialized Services but remained in the jewelry display business working for a variety of employers until finally finding a home with Dallas-based Spirit International where he remained until his health forced his retirement from actively working.

Don loved and was loved by many including close friends and family members. He was the kind of man who never met a stranger and made friends easily. This was undoubtedly due to his kind, loving and carefree nature. Don was a conservative Republican, a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, a music lover, and a companion to his beloved dog Benji.

Don was preceded in death by his father, Jim Cowart; mother, Johnnie Lee Cowart; brothers, Jimmy Cowart and Johnny Cowart; sisters, Diane Cowart and Patricia Cowart Hancock.

He is survived by his children, Marcus Cowart and wife, Cecy, Julie Cowart Clarke and husband, Michael, Dionne Cowart, Robert “Jeff” Cowart and wife, Nidia, Tylar Cowart and Colby Freeman and wife Neisha; grandchildren, Sabrina Cowart, Victoria and Josue Granados Loor, Rory and Jake Cowart, Jade Cowart Perkins, Lizzie, Harrison and Emmett Cowart and Presley and Cru Freeman; great grandson, Jacob Perkins; ex-wife, Theresa Ramsey and numerous other family members and friends.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, November 17, 2022, at 2 pm at the Riley Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at the Ferrell Cemetery in Colmesneil.  Visitation will be held Thursday from 1 pm until 2 pm at the funeral Home.
