Benjamin Stewart, Jr. Obituary

Coach Ben Stewart Jr. of Colmesneil, Texas lost his battle with Alzheimer’s on Monday, December 11th.

Born on November 19, 1948, Coach Stewart was a servant leader who served his community with honor, integrity and pride, alongside his beloved wife and love of his life, Sheila Kay.  The two were inseparable for 54 years and raised 3 children in their hometown of Colmesneil.

As a small child and teenager, Coach Stewart lived in Rockland, Texas and attended the Colmesneil Independent School district. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1970 with a B.S. in Education and Kinesiology.  He coached one year at Mineola, Texas, then moved to Corpus Christi for one additional year before finally obtaining the opportunity to return to the town he loved the most, Colmesneil, where he lived, taught, coached, and inspired countless students.  He aspired to always better his education and eventually returned to SFA to obtain his Master’s and PhD.

After 38 years, Coach Stewart retired as an educator, coach, and principal from the Colmesneil Independent School district. Coach Stewart is most known for his love of his family, students, and colleagues he has had the opportunity to lead throughout the years.  He devoted his life to a love of all sports, but especially football and baseball.  Along with the enormous amount of lives inspired by Coach Stewart, he is most known for his role as the baseball coach with 6 State Baseball Championship appearances (1979, 1980, 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1990) and 4 State Baseball Championship titles (1980, 1985, 1986, and 1990), and being one of the first Class A State Baseball Championship coaches with a back-to-back win in 1985 and 1986.  Coach Stewart is recognized in the Texas Baseball Coach’s Hall of Fame.  One of his favorite stories he loved to tell was how he brought the Rocky song, Gonna Fly Now, to Colmesneil to pump up his athletes.  It is a tradition that has lived on in his hometown.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Mary Lou Stewart; his son- in-law John Settlocker; mother-in-law Bernadine Miles; and his siblings Betty Trahan and Helen Doucet. He is survived by his wife Sheila Stewart; his children Melissa Ramsey, B.J. Stewart, and Dena Settlocker; his son-in-law Lance Ramsey; his daughter-in-law Jennifer Stewart; and his grandchildren Mikayla Amason, Evan Stewart, Ben Stewart, Michael Amason, Dru Stewart, and Miles Settlocker; his sibling Carla Stewart; his sister-in-law Tina Mullins; and many beloved nephews and nieces.

He was a man of great integrity and strove to be honest and fair with everyone he encountered. He had a great sense of humor, good nature, loved the Dallas Cowboys, loved to be surrounded by his family, former students, colleagues and friends, and a love for the game of golf. He was always generous and affectionate with loved ones. He was easy to love. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but they are at peace knowing he is with the Lord. He will be celebrated as a champion in every aspect of his life.
